221: Inflammation, Systemic Enzymes & SPMs with Carly Stagg, FNP

In this week’s podcast episode, Carly and I are talking all about:

✔️The inflammatory process

✔️Why you don’t want to stop the inflammation process too early (like with NSAIDs or acetaminophen)

✔️Why we NEED inflammation and compounds like cholesterol and SPMs as part of the process

✔️The difference between regular fish oil and exogenous SMPs

✔️How to use systemic enzymes to support the anti-inflammatory process.

Come listen for some great insight and our two favorite anti-inflammatory supplements!

SHOW NOTES

(0:00) Intro

(1:02) Carly is back on the podcast to talk about 2 powerhouse supplements: systemic enzymes and Specialized pro-resolving mediators.

(4:12) Defining inflammation and breaking down acute versus chronic inflammation

(6:40) Breaking down the first stage of the inflammatory response (immune initiation)

(13:18) Explaining the second stage of the inflammatory response (immune resolution)

(19:10) The role of cholesterol in the inflammatory response

(21:00) Inflammation markers

  • An optimal hsCRP is less than 1.0. An hsCRP in moderate inflammation is between 1 and 3, while an hsCRP in severe inflammation is 3 or greater.

Elevated homocysteine can be related to poor methylation, which enables the usability of B vitamins, as well as generalized inflammation.

  • An optimal Homocysteine is less than about 6.

Total Cholesterol reflects the summary of all cholesterol types in blood; non-specific. Cholesterol tends to rise with age as the body addresses increased inflammation.

Optimal range varies by age and gender.

  • <60 yo : 150-230

  • >60 yo male: 180-260

  • >60 yo female: 200-270

(27:12) When to know if your body needs more support

  • High and rising CRP levels, continued chronic pain and fatigue, high homocysteine, high GGT.

(30:28) Lipid & Inflammation Healing Solutions

  • Consume enough fatty acids for optimal inflammatory response

  • Ensure nutrient sufficiency

  • Magnesium

  • Folate

  • B12

  • Systemic Enzymes

Systemic Enzymes

  • “Pac Man” for inflammation - it goes into the body/bloodstream and “chomps” up all the little inflammatory molecules and fibrin, which are byproducts of inflammation and impair cellular communication

  • Dissolve-It-All

    • Supports cardiovascular and chronic inflammatory health

    • Contains Serrapeptase & Nattokinase, as well as other complementary ingredients (Bromelain, Papain, Lipase, Proteases, Rutin & Amla)

    • Serrapeptase: Research shows serrapeptase possesses significant anti-inflammatory, proteolytic (protein dissolving) and fibrinolytic (fibrin dissolving) properties. It reduces scar tissue, improves tissue healing and supports a healthy respiratory system.

    • Nattokinase: Nattokinase has powerful anti-inflammatory and fibrin-degrading activity.

    • Suggested use is to take 1-3 capsules daily on empty stomach; if taken WITH food it will aid in protein digestion. Fine, but not the goal :)

  • Intenzyme Forte

    • Pain, headaches, chronic inflammation, also doubles as digestive enzyme when consumed with food

    • 4-6 tablets daily on an empty stomach

  • SPM Active

    • Supercharged compound derived from fish oil to regulate/balance the immune response and reduce hyperactivity. The body should be able to MAKE SPMs from Omega-3 supplementation and/or things in our diet.

    • You’ll remember from earlier in our discussion that in phase 2 of inflammation, production of pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) presses the STOP button  on inflammatory functions and symptoms and promotes waste removal & tissue regeneration. So giving exogenous SPMs is a great additional support!

    • Can take 2 capsules 2-3x daily for acute inflammation, then 2 capsules daily ongoing.

    • This is a great support for elevated CRP & homocysteine (unrelated or unresponsive to B vitamin supplementation)

(54:00) How should we approach taking systemic enzymes long-term?
