I am asked about cholesterol All. The. Time.

The scenario usually goes something like this:

My labs came back, my cholesterol is high and my doctor said I should eat less eggs and meat and consider taking a statin. 

Well, you know we’re big fans of eggs and meat around here but I understand that when your doctor tells you the opposite, it’s very disconcerting. That’s why I’m so happy that my guest on the podcast this week is here to set the record straight. He is a board certified cardiologist, known as America’s #1 natural heart doctor. He is VERY against statins (going so far as to point out how close it is to the word satan 😳). Dr. Wolfson says the focus on LDL and HDL is a very “1970’s conversation” and that there are much better markers to look at to assess the risk of heart disease. Dr. Wolfson recommends looking at the following:


🔸Oxidized LDL
🔸Apo B to Apo A ratio

🔸HsCRP

🔸Lipid Peroxides (this is his #1 pick because it measures the level of oxidative stress)

Mostly, these markers are signs of inflammation. As I’ve explained before, one of the many roles of cholesterol is to help put out the fire of inflammation. When you artificially lower cholesterol (as through a statin), you are removing the fireman who came to your house to help put out the fire. 


On top of that, because cholesterol is so critical to so many functions of the body, you increase your risk of many health issues when you don’t have enough. I recently shared this research in The Christian Health Club showing that higher LDL promotes longevity. We need to get with the times and stop thinking of HDL as “good” and LDL as “bad.” They both serve an important purpose in the body.
