166: Calming Your Nervous System with Carly Stagg, MSN, RN, FNP-C
🙋Ever feel like your nerves are shot? Our nervous system should be able to shift in and out of calm and stress gears but many of us get stuck in the stress mode. This is a problem because the nervous system affects EVERY system in the body. When it can’t shift back to calm, it wreaks havoc on our physical and mental health.
In this week’s episode, Nurse Practitioner and FNTP, Carly Stagg, shares that she often sees this as a roadblock to her patients’ healing and has had to incorporate strategies in her practice to help people shift their nervous systems back into the parasympathetic/calm state in order to facilitate the healing process.
Come listen to determine whether your nervous system is in the ventral, sympathetic or dorsal state and the tools she uses to shift it back into a calm, healthy baseline.

In this week’s podcast we’re talking about having awareness around times you feel “icky” about yourself and how that can affect your health spiritually, mentally and physically. I gained five pounds and teetered on the edge of emotional breakdown until I made a decision to step back and give myself some space.
This week’s episode is a little rambly and teary but, ultimately, I hope I’m setting a good example of walking the talk when it comes to self-stewardship.

Did you know that mental health issues can stem from nutritional deficiencies? Particularly an amino acid deficiency?
In this week’s episode, Christina Veselak - licensed psychotherapist, functional nutritionist and founder of the Academy for Addiction & Mental Health Nutrition, explains how issues like depression, anxiety, poor focus, insomnia, perfectionism, anger, worry, obsessive thinking, self shame, addiction and even the inability to forgive can all be due to a lack of the amino acids that build our mood mediating neurotransmitters. She has seen increased protein intake and targeted amino acid therapy save marriages, prevent panic attacks, stave off suicidal thoughts and remedy Attention Deficit Disorder.

162: Protein to Energy Ratio
Did you know that humans are hardwired to eat until we get enough protein? Amino acids are so critical to health that your body will drive you to keep eating if you’re not getting enough. The more we prioritize protein, the quicker our body will be full and satisfied which lessens the risk of overeating the energy foods (carbs and fats). Excess energy gets stored as fat so, the better we manage our P:E ratio, the better we regulate our appetite, our weight and our health.
In this week’s podcast we’re diving deeper into this nutritional concept as we prepare to start my new program - 10x Stronger - which prioritizes protein and building muscle. Come listen and come join us!

161: The Strategy of Protein Distribution
If we want a leaner body composition, healthy weight, strong bones, production of feel-good neurotransmitters, high brain function, steady hormones, beautiful skin and shiny hair - we need more than a scrape-by level of protein - we need optimal protein intake. Sadly, the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) is just not enough.
In this week’s podcast, we’re talking about an ideal amount of protein plus the strategy of even protein distribution for better muscle protein synthesis, appetite control, blood sugar stability and overall general health.
Come listen as I lay out the plan for my new program 10x Stronger starting in May!

160: Muscle, Metabolism & Minimum Effective Dose
Last fall I turned 47 and all of a sudden I noticed that my arms were waving back at me - you know, that underarm skin seems flappier than it used to be. Then I realized that, actually, my whole body feels flappier than it used to be - kind of loose and collapsed. I thought, Here we go! Welcome to middle age, sisterI
What most people don’t realize is that we start losing muscle mass in our mid 30’s and unless we work to counteract that process, it’s a downhill spiral toward weight gain, bone loss, and overall diminished health. Muscle is our highest metabolic asset and the organ of longevity. When it starts to go, so does our metabolism and our overall health.
This set me on a journey of formulating a plan for myself which I’ve decided to turn into a new challenge and program for my clients. I figure I can’t be the only one who needs a gameplan!
In this week’s podcast we’re talking all about muscle, metabolism and minimum effective dose (which is the current approach to muscle building that I’m working on!). Come listen and learn more about the why, the how, and the what to do about it!
